About Me:
Welcome! My name is Mr. Tim Spangler, and I am the band director at Upper Merion Area High School. It is my third year at the High School and 12th year in the district! Previously, I taught band for two years at the Middle School. Before that, I was the music teacher at Candlebrook Elementary for 7 years. There I taught general music classes to students in grades K-4, 3rd & 4th grade strings and 4th grade band. Here at the HS I teach band lessons to students in 9th-12th grades. I also have several extracurricular ensembles including Marching Band and Jazz Band. Students who had previous experience on an instrument and beginners are all welcome to join the band!! We have three main concerts during the school year: our Winter Concert in December, our Pops Concert in February, and our Spring Concert in May. We also participate in various festivals and events. All concert band lessons are included in the student's schedule and each period is approximately 48 minutes long. Students may also sign up for "Advanced Band," which meets during Learn 1 on Days 1, 3, 4 & 6. Zero period meets at 7:00am every morning for sectional rehearsals. To schedule concert band in your child's schedule or to schedule Advanced Band, please do not hesitate to contact me or your child's counselor!BackgroundI am a product of Upper Merion education! I attended Bridgeport Elementary for 1st and 2nd grades and then switched to Caley Elementary for 3rd and 4th grades. After graduating from UMAHS, I attended Messiah College where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Music Education. I completed my Master's Degree in Wind Conducting from Messiah College (now Messiah University!) in 2017. I am always looking for ways to continue my education! At the beginning of my teaching career, I held a long-term substitute position at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic School in West Chester, PA during the 2009/2010 school year. At Ss. P&P, I was responsible for teaching general music classes for grades K-8. I was also responsible for preparing the students for their annual Christmas play. Ss. P&P offered me a great start to my teaching career! For the 2010/2011 school year, I was the LTS general music teacher/chorus director at Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School in Berwyn, PA. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, where I taught general music grades 5-8 and directed the 5/6 chorus, 7/8 chorus, and Cantabile. This is my 12th year in Upper Merion, and third year at the High School. In many ways I have come full circle! I previously taught at the Middle School for two years and Candlebrook Elementary for 7 years prior to that. I anticipate an exciting year reconnecting with former students and meeting new ones!
