Laura Verges

    Laura Verges
    English Language Development Program Specialist
    Roberts Elementary School, .5

This is my 26th year in the Upper Merion Area School District and my 19th year teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).  Prior to this position, I was a classroom teacher for 3rd, 4th, and 8th grades in Upper Merion.  Throughout my career I have taught students at every grade level and in many different school settings, from a boarding school in Massachusetts to a rural school in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, Africa.

I received my Bachelor of Science in International Relations from Northern Illinois University, my elementary education certification from Drexel University, and my Master of Education from Arcadia University.  I hold certifications in Elementary Education, Reading Specialist, and English as a Second Language Specialist.

My own two children are multi-lingual.  In our family, I speak English while my husband maintains French with our children. In addition, my daughter is fluent in Spanish and studying Chinese.

While becoming proficient in English is crucial to success in school, I often remind my students that being bilingual/multilingual is an asset.  Maintaining home languages should always be a priority!
