African American Studies
  • AP African American Studies

Course Description: AP African American studies is an interdisciplinary course that examines the diversity of African American experiences through direct encounters with authentic and varied sources. Students explore key topics that extend from early African kingdoms to the ongoing challenges and achievements of the contemporary movement. Given the interdisciplinary character of African American studies, students in the course will develop skills across multiple fields, with an emphasis on developing historical, literary, visual, and data analysis skills. This course foregrounds a study of the diversity of Black communities in the United States within the broader context of Africa and the African diaspora.

    Mr. Reid

Hello Upper Merion Area School District,

I am so excited to be an educator in this amazing community!

As a History Teacher at Upper Merion High School, I take pride in teaching 9th Grade Humanities, 11th Grade American Cultures, and African American Studies, (available in 10th-12th grades.)

In my first year at Upper Merion High School (2022-2023), I was able to accomplish so many milestones as the first African American Studies teacher who taught the very first African American Studies class. This group and many other students in the high school shared many experiences as Black Student Union members (I have recently accepted a role as one of its staff leaders), taking the district's first Historically Black Colleges and Universities Tour to Howard University, Virginia State University, and Norfolk State University (I was proudly one of the trips chaperons and will continue to be), and assisting in decorating the Sankofa stamps for the seniors Kente Ceremony and Graduation.

I am passionate about the work I've accomplished in only one school year and look forward to doing more for this community!

    Respectfully,

    Matt Reid
