7th to 8th Grade Math Acceleration
7th to 8th Grade Math Acceleration
In the Upper Merion Area School District we are proud to offer acceleration in mathematics in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Each year we use a process specific for each grade level to identify students to accelerate in mathematics. This gives students four chances at acceleration starting in 4th grade.
There are two paths students may take going into 8th grade:
- 1-year accelerated path = Algebra 1
- Recommended for 40% - 50% of incoming 8th grade students.
- A rigorous path intended for students who would like the opportunity to take Calculus in 12th grade.
- Students on this path will take Algebra 2 or Honors Algebra 2 during their 9th grade year.
- Algebra 1 in 8th grade is an accelerated math course in our district.
- On-grade level path = Algebra 1A
- Recommended for 40% - 50% of incoming 8th grade students.
- Students on this path will take Algebra 1B in 9th grade and will have the opportunity to accelerate into Honors Algebra 2 in 10th grade.
- This is an on-grade level course. In our school district we consider a student to be on-grade level if they complete Algebra 1 by the end of 9th grade.

Math Acceleration Decision Process
We use a combination of math scores from 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade to determine the 8th grade math placement of either Algebra 1A (on-grade level) or Algebra 1 (accelerated).
- 5th Grade = 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Quarter Marking Period Grades
- 6th Grade = 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Quarter Marking Period Grades
- 7th Grade = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Quarter Marking Period Grades
In late June, you will receive a letter with your child's scores and their math placement for 8th grade.
Appeal Process
If you disagree with the decision about acceleration for your child you may appeal the decision. An appeals process is in place for two reasons: (1) If your child did not qualify and you would like to appeal the decision or (2) if your child did qualify and you would like your child to stay on-grade level in math. We use multiple criteria to determine if the appeal will be granted.
If you would like to appeal the decision, please contact Dr. Sean Gardiner directly at sgardiner@umasd.org. Please include the following in your email:
- Your child’s name.
- Your child’s current grade level.
- The reason you are appealing the decision.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Sean Gardiner directly at sgardiner@umasd.org. All math acceleration decisions are handled through the Curriculum & Instruction office and not by individual teachers or building principals.
