Dear Parent/Guardian/Caregiver:
On behalf of the district’s curriculum and instruction office, we appreciate your partnership with your child’s teacher this year. As we close out this school year, we need to know his or her specific instructional levels. This May/June, students in Third Grade and Fourth Grade will take PSSA state tests. Students in Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade will take an assessment called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®).
The purpose of the MAP assessments is to determine your child’s instructional level in reading and math. MAP tests adapt to determine a student’s level. As a result, each student will take a test that is different from other students in the class. For example, when a student gets a question wrong, the next question is easier; if they get a question right, the next question is harder. By giving the assessments on their iPad, we are able to give a test that is specifically responsive to each student, determining if the student’s reading and math levels are below, on, or above their grade level. Students will take the following MAP assessments:
● Kindergarten -- MAP for Primary Grades (MPG)
● 1st Grade -- MAP for Primary Grades (MPG), MAP Math
● 2nd Grade -- MAP Reading, MAP Language, MAP Math
Please be patient as we support students in getting started and completing their MAP assessments. The teacher (and learning coach for those in the Virtual Academy) will help students get started. Once the student has gotten started and can navigate the iPad, they are to complete the MAP assessment independently.
These MAP scores will help determine how much your child has learned and next steps in their instruction next school year. Thank you for your continued support as we partner in your child’s learning.
