About the Scholarship Fund
The Scholarship Fund began in the fall of 1990 with the formation of a nine member Board of Trustees who shared a vision and purpose to assist outstanding graduating students in financial need to further their educational goals. The Trustees make awards annually which are presented during the district’s Ivy Day ceremonies in June. Since the first presentations in 1991, over $494,000 has been awarded. The Fund is supported by the tax deductible contributions of business, industry, civic and service organizations as well as donations from private citizens. Trustees need to receive additional funds each year in order to guarantee continuity of the Fund and its awards.
Trustees are actively involved in the Upper Merion Area School District community. Some members are graduates of our high school and now have their own children attending our schools. Some joined the district community from other cities and towns, started families, and watched their sons and daughters graduate from Upper Merion Area High School. What they all have in common is their strong desire to give something back to their community by continuing the vision of the Fund’s founding members.
How Recipients Are Selected
Applications, typically requested in early spring of the student’s graduating year, are reviewed by the Upper Merion Area High School professional staff and are treated confidentially. Eligible candidates are interviewed by the Board of Trustees in May. Awards are made by the Trustees based on the student’s financial need and academic record. Extracurricular activities are considered significant in the review process.
