EMERGENCY CLOSING
When snow, ice, other adverse conditions or another emergency require Upper Merion Area Schools to be closed, the following procedures take effect:
The Superintendent or designee makes every effort to determine to close schools (and/or offices) before 6:00 AM on the day in question.
The automated phone calling system will be used to notify families of school closings. In addition, if schools are closed, UMASD school closing will be announced on local media outlets and the Viking Channel, the school district’s cable access channel. Announcements should start by 6:30 AM. Information may also be obtained on the web page at www.umasd.org.
An emergency closing is for a one-day period. If schools must remain closed for another day, a second announcement will be made. No announcement is made regarding the reopening of schools.
Occasionally, the Superintendent determines that schools must close early. This decision is based on weather, traffic and area road conditions. These factors sometimes change hourly. If schools are closed early, the information will be sent via School Messenger, the Viking Channel, the Web Page and the Information Line. KYW Newsradio will be notified; however, the district cannot guarantee that they will carry dismissal notices.
- If schools are closed or dismissed early, all extracurricular activities and other activities are cancelled for that day.
