Ms. Newhart E-107
Welcome to Honors Chemistry! Below is the information needed for you to complete the Honors Chemistry Summer Assignment. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email listed below. Be patient as I will frequently be away from my computer.Due Date: "Chance Favors the prepared mind." ~Louis Pasteur (1854)Students are required to submit a summary of their summer work on the first day of school. Even though only a summary is submitted, the more you are prepared, the better chance you have at success! (Basically saying completing all of the assignments are HIGHLY encouraged). Students can bring in completed assignments the first day of school; student questions will be reviewed, content will not be taught directly. Please do not wait until the end of the summer to do this!Expectations
To be successful in chemistry you require certain basic skills supporting more complex concepts. Honors students are expected to be curious, have strong time management skills, self-directed, and able to "think outside the box." This summer assignment will assess your basic skills while involving time management and self-directed learning.Good to know: Within this class all work and units must be shown for full credit of problems. For Help: If you need help during the summer please contact me at lnewhart@umasd.orgYou can also contact:- Mrs. Hallquist - dhallquist@umasd.org

Step 1: Algebraic Manipulatives-In chemistry, as in many sciences, it is crucial to have the ability to rearrange an algebraic expression. Using the attached Algebra tutorial, review (or learn) how to rearrange an equation and complete the 4 practice problems.Step 2: Metrics and Measurement-Chemistry requires a significant understanding of measurement and the metric system. Review the attached tutorial on the metric system and complete the 11 practice problems.Step 3: Scientific Notation-Chemistry calculations can involve some very large and/or very small numbers. Scientific notation provides an efficient way to deal with these numbers. Review the attached tutorial on scientific notation and complete the 9 practice problems.Step 4: Balancing Chemical Equations-Matter can not be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed to a different form of matter. To help prove this, it is important to be able to balance a chemical equation.Click Here for the assignment.Step 5: Balancing Chemical Equations--Practice-Extra Balancing Problems.-Complete the problems 1-20.
