    Hello 4th-grade families,

     

    We have an exciting set of choices for 5th-grade students to make in 2023-24.  Their morning Unified Arts teachers are offering a set of Electives that students will rank and then be assigned to some of their choices by the Middle School administrative team.  Students are not guaranteed to get their top choices but we will do our best.

     

    Students will rank the following Electives:

    • Swimming - Activities in the pool to include learning basic swimming strokes and water games/activities that reinforce swimming skills.

    • Cooperative games - Students will participate in cooperative game activities that include....obstacle course, capture the flag, disc golf, relay races and many more. 

    • You Are What You Eat - How food impacts your health. Students will engage in health lessons that focus on the impact nutrition has on our health and wellness.

    • Competitive Sports - Students will participate in a range of competitive activities and sports including floor hockey, ultimate ball, basketball, flag football, soccer and more.    

    • Chess - Students of all experience levels come play chess!  After an introduction, students play against each other, play against similarly skilled classmates or friends.

    • Creativity in Leadership - Students will participate in a variety of hands-on activities designed to foster creative thinking-- the lifeblood of entertainment, innovation, and progress.

    • Building Backyard Habitats - Students will learn beginner woodworking skills while building habitats for different animals indigenous to their backyards.

    • 3D Design - Use a computer-aided drafting program to build scale models of houses based on student-designed floorplans using the fundamentals of 3D design and printing. 

    • Coding Retro Video Games - Using Pyonkee, students will create their own retro video games such as PacMan, Asteroids, Pong, and more.

    • Introduction to Python - Students will learn the basics of the Python programming language, which allows you work with data quickly and integrate systems more effectively.      

    • Drawing from Observation - If you love to draw, this class will help develop your drawing skills through observational drawing. We will use a variety of drawing materials.

    • Art and Mindfulness - In this class, we will practice mindfulness, listen to music, and do art journaling using a variety of materials.  

    • Beginning Piano - In beginning piano, students will get hands-on experience with keyboards and learn the basics of piano playing.   

    • Music and Movement - Students will learn choreographed dances to various music styles from folk to pop.  We will also learn how to choreograph our own class dance.

    • Magical Illusions - The teacher performs illusions, and students hypothesize about how they work. Students learn the methods behind magic tricks and practice themselves.

    • Mindful Relaxation Strategies - Students will learn to slow their breathing and heart rate by practicing mindful relaxation strategies to reduce stress and enjoy each day more.

    This Thursday, May 25 or Friday, May 26, 4th-grade students will complete a Google form during school to rank their preferences.  The students’ forms will go to the MS administration and they will assign electives over the summer.

     

    Sounds like fun, right?  You bet!
