October, 2006

{1}

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have many “new” things in place this year at Roberts. Here are just a few!

New Health and Wellness PolicyThe Upper Merion Area School District has created and adopted a wellness policy for students and staff. The purpose is to establish lifelong habits for optimal health with an emphasis in the areas of nutrition, physical activity, and making healthy choices for emotional and social well being. The Roberts School Health Committee developed a plan this summer for implementation at the building level focusing on strategies to establish healthy routines and increase physical activity.

New Progress Reports – This will be the first year all elementary schools in the district will use the new standards based progress reports. The first reports will be sent home before parent teacher conferences in November. A special evening information session to explain the new progress reports will take place for all parents of elementary students at Candlebrook Elementary on October 24, 2006 at 7:00PM.

New  District,  Roberts, and Staff  Web Pages – If you haven’t had an opportunity to see the new and improved UMASD website yet, you are in for a treat! Just log onto www.umasd.org  and you will have all the information at the district and building levels at your fingertips. The Roberts Homepage includes a calendar with upcoming events and special notices. You may also log onto teacher web pages for specific grade level information.

New Partnership EventRoberts Family Reading Rally November 29 Parents and students are invited to come back to school on this evening to learn tips and strategies for success in reading. Activities will include shared reading, vocabulary building and phonics games, read aloud, and ideas for parents to help their children with reading. The Barnes and Nobles Roberts Reading Night will take place October 19th.  Additional information will be forthcoming.

New Reading Incentive Theme Our Roberts Reading Incentive Theme this year is "Pirates of the Cara-Reading”. We hope to encourage life long reading skills by making reading fun with our theme and special events throughout the year. Students will bring home a reading log donated by the Upper Merion Township Library. For each book read, the students will earn a gold coin in their classroom to throw into our reading treasure chest. They can earn pieces of a pirate’s costume during the year and many other treasures! Set sail for a great year of reading with “Pirates of the Cara- Reading”!

New Elementary Team Planning Early Dismissal Dates – Please see enclosed letter from the superintendent with important information for parents.

Attached is the Roberts December Calendar which lists the events for the month. You may also find these events on the Roberts Calendar on the UMASD website.

We are having a wonderful year with your children!

Sincerely,

Sharon Kuznick
